A 2016 Rwanda Premier League fixture between Mukura Victory Sports and Rayon Sports descended into chaos after players from both sides clashed over suspicions of “juju” being used before kickoff.
Footage from the match resurfaced online, showing Mukura’s goalkeeper placing an unidentified object on the goal line moments before play was set to begin. Alerted by their technical bench, Rayon Sports players rushed to the spot to remove the suspected charm, triggering a heated confrontation between both teams.
The drama caused two interruptions to the match as officials struggled to restore order. Although the exact object placed on the goal line was never officially confirmed, the incident renewed debate about superstition and spiritual practices in African football.
This was one of several high-profile moments that highlighted the long-held belief in juju across parts of the sport—where some players and clubs are suspected of relying on charms, rituals, or traditional practices to gain an advantage on the pitch.
